Abstract

In the past twenty-five years, Olympic host cities have increasingly focused their attention on environmental issues. Given the growing emphasis on environmental sustainability across sport, the purpose of this project was to examine the environmental attitudes and behaviors of residents in Los Angeles, the host city of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Using survey research methods to explore local attitudes toward sustainability initiatives, the results indicated Angelenos broadly support sustainability practices in general and those specific to sport, but that they are largely unaware of existing pro-environmental practices and initiatives. By establishing a baseline of residents’ environmental attitudes and behaviors, the results of this study can be used to inform policy and governance in future Olympic cities seeking to design and deliver an event with a lasting positive impact on the community and a positive environmental legacy.
